Kieora Nichols of Jacksonville, N.C. and Nolan Riley of Augusta were named Barton Community College’s 2019 Outstanding Graduates. Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy introduced them and presented their awards during the college’s 49th commencement ceremony Friday.

Barton Community College has announced its 2018-19 Brant J. Ballhorst Student Ambassador of the Year awards. Named in memory of Brant J. Ballhorst, the award recognizes two outstanding Student Ambassadors each year. The winners this year were Delaney Smith of Hoisington and Joanna Lockwood of Hoisington.

Barton Community College will offer transitioning Fort Riley Soldiers, Veterans and family members with DOD ID cards, a grant-funded two-week certificate program at no cost to participants.
The Hazardous Waste Worker Training (HWWT) program gives Soldiers credentials to help them find work after their tenure in the US Army ends. The next course is set from June 3-14 at Barton’s campus near Junction City: 100 Continental Ave, Grandview Plaza, Kan. which is just north of I-70 at exit 299.

Barton Community College is hosting auditions for its dance company, Barton Dance Theater, at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14 in Studio 34, located in the Sunflower housing units on Barton’s campus.
Members of Barton Dance Theater will experience trips with the company to perform in diverse venues, attend workshops and see dance concerts live. With this time set aside, students can focus on the art form of dance in the styles of modern-contemporary, jazz and ballet.

Barton Community College’s 49th commencement is set for 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, in the Barton Gymnasium. The ceremony will be following a shorter format this year. There will be no official speaker.
After brief comments from President Dr. Heilman, Vice President of Student Services Angie Maddy will present the 2019 Outstanding Graduate awards to Kieora Nichols and Nolan Riley.

Law enforcement may be in Keaton Goering’s blood, but family history isn’t the only factor that influences his new career. Goering’s grandfather was in law enforcement for five decades and his father was a detective. However, his experiences at Barton Community College have kept him motivated.
The new Barton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) patrol deputy successfully completed Barton’s Criminal Justice curriculum and is scheduled to attend the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center this summer.

Sophomore art student Jada Whiterock is no slouch as an artist. She’s proficient in drawing and has become more skilled with other mediums throughout her journey through the Barton art department. While she knows she will always create art, her time at Barton has led her to discover her dream career focused on the conservation and curation of art and artifacts.

First, you go to High School. Then, you go to college. That’s how it’s been done for years, but that’s not how it has to be done in this day and age, and Hoisington High School senior Taylor Schwartz is living proof. Thanks to a combination of online and summer class options at Barton Community College, she is graduating high school in May and five days later she will graduate from Barton with her associate degree in science.

Sophomore art student Brodie Owens’ work was accepted into the 50th Annual Smoky Hill Art Exhibition. His piece won a $100 prize. The exhibit will be at the Hays Arts Council Gallery 112 E. 11th St. in Hays and will be on display through June 8.
Owens’ entry was a black and white photograph titled “Old Timey.”
