Barton Community College’s Community Service Organization and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will host a 5K walk/run 8 a.m. Sunday, April 29. Registration will be at 7:30 a.m. in the Fine Arts circle drive at Barton. All proceeds will be donated to Camp Hope.
The course begins and ends at Barton. There will be two groups: 16 and over and 15 and under. The top three finishers in each group will be awarded immediately following the race.

Explore the depths of space and the mysteries of the cosmos at the Barton Planetarium which will host several activities this spring. The Planetarium is located in the Science Building on Barton Community College’s campus. Enter through the sliding doors on the north side. Admission is free.

Barton Community College will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 5 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157. The recital is free.

Tye Sanders’ renewed vigor for life, high energy and confident gait might make her hard to recognize compared to two years ago, and not to mention the 70 pounds she has lost in that timeframe.
She credits her transformation to the faculty and staff at Barton Community College at Fort Leavenworth, where she has been studying criminology.

The image that comes to mind for hazardous materials might be a broken barrel with radioactive glowing green goo coming out of it, but the reality is hazardous materials can be household chemicals; they are everywhere and can pose a threat to the public’s safety and health if a container is breached or if materials are not handled according to regulations.

Barton Community College will be closed on Friday, March 30 and Monday, April 2 for Easter break. Barton's Center for Adult Education and the Shafer Art Gallery will also be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 3.

The Barton Foundation will host its Ninth Annual Sporting Clay Shoot from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22 at Camp Aldrich, 884 NE 110 Ave. in Claflin. This year’s shoot is sanctioned by Hammeke Electric, Inc. and P & S Security.
Shooters can participate as individuals or as three-person teams in a modified 100-target Lewis Class style tournament. This is not a National Sporting Clays Association sponsored event.

Finally, after over five months of essentially nonexistent precipitation, most of the area received significant moisture with some places receiving well over an inch. The title of this column is a bit tongue and cheek and it is safe to assume we all know the drought is nowhere near over and in fact conditions are little improved. In fact for much of the area the drought rating improved only marginally as dry as the State continues to be.
